Powerscourt distillery is housed in an old mill house, situated beside the world famous Powerscourt gardens.
Powerscourt distillery is located in the well appointed and beautiful grounds of Powerscourt in county Wicklow. The history of the Estate can be traced back to the 6th century giving the whiskey a twinkle of intrigue. Today, Powerscourt is still in family ownership by the Slazenger family. Their own history will weave itself into their whiskey.
Attention to detail is key, even down to the Powerscourt logo, with the outline of the local Sugarloaf mountain shimmering in the background. This detail can be seen in all aspects with their cask offer, there is only 397 barrels because that is the height of the spectacular Powerscourt waterfall;(397 feet).
The distillery is housed in an old mill, which has been faithfully restored and extended to help accommodate the distillery’s development. Powerscourt is steeped in history and built using local Wicklow granite. The mill even houses its very own ancient water mill deep in its original foundations. Inside these historical walls now lie some of the most beautiful stills around. Hand beaten as they would have been when the mill was built, these stills come from another family with great heritage; the Forsyths in Rothes. The Forsyths have been custom building stills for generations, their work is world renowned.
Powerscourt were also savy in their choice of distiller; Noel Sweeney. Noel is a legend in the distilling world. He has designed some of the most coveted whiskey’s in his thirty years of distilling. “As distiller, the decisions that I make impart huge influence over the spirit produced. Cereals, yeast, flow rates, temperatures, production timings, cuts, wood, time – so many choices and decisions affect the way that spirit forms and matures into whiskey.”
Powerscourt have launched their first whiskey’s called Fercullen; the name is inspired by the ancient territorial name given to the lands on which the Powerscourt Estate is located. Join us on our adventure around this wonderful estate.
