Glendalough distillery near the deep, glacial valley nestled in the Wicklow Mountains.
About
The Glendalough Distillery was set up by a group of friends from Wicklow and Dublin with a passion for reviving the heritage of craft distilling in Ireland. In 2011 this group of friends left their secure jobs with the determination to bring that craft alive again in the wilds of county Wicklow. The venture was able to draw on the expertise of these five men, as all had worked in some part of the drinks industry, whether it be finance, advertising or distilling. They drew upon inspiration from the heritage of distilling and their location in ‘The Garden of Ireland’. Their innovation lead to the release of poitín, closely followed by a sherried poitín.
The Distillery
In 2013 they had their very own boutique distillery, with a Holstein still from Germany taking centre stage. By 2014, confidence in what they were doing was palpable, with Ireland’s rugby legend, Brian O’Driscoll investing in this small, much admired distillery. In 2017 they quietly announced the purchase of a substantial amount of land a skip away from the lakes of Glendalough. Careful thought is going into the design of this modern yet sympathic design.
Poitín and Whiskey
Glendalough distillery have made an art form out of the production of their line of poitíns (Irish word meaning small pot; un-aged whiskey). From clean, clear nectar to mountain strenght poitín and the more unusal sherried poitín. Made from both malted barley and sugar beet. Glendalough Sherry finish is matured first in virgin Irish oak casks then transferred into Sherry casks for a final finishing. As for their whiskey’s equal innovative thought and care went into the range. One of our favourites here at Irish Irish Whiskey Tours HQ, has got to be their thirteen year old Mizunara finish single malt. Join us on our next visit to this unique distillery.
