Slane Whiskey Distillery at Slane Castle in the historic Boyne Valley – County Meath
Slane distillery is partially housed in the beautiful stone stables dating from 1796 on the grounds of Slane Castle. Slane distillery lies in the infamous Boyne Valley; twenty minutes from the city of Drogheda, a city/town known for its history in whiskey as well as battles. Drogheda was once the home to eighteen distilleries with the last ceasing in the sixties.
Lord Henry Mount Charles (The 8th Marquess Conyngham) and his son Alex Conyngham, entered into the whiskey business in 2009. They bottled and labeled their very own blended whiskey, under the name of Slane Whiskey. It proved quite popular not least with the whiskey enthusiasts of America. This success lead to a exciting new partnership with Brown-Forman in 2015; two great families with rather exiting and somewhat dramatic histories. These great dynasties came together to build the new and stylish Slane distillery. Set on the grounds of Slane Castle the approach is rather awe-inspiring, curling around the estate.
“It is uplifting and inspiring to see our shared vision of having a distillery become a reality,” said Alex Conyngham.

No expense was spared with the design of the distillery and visitors centre. With Brown-Formans long lineage in whiskey, possibly most noted for Jack Daniels and the Conynghams passion for Irish whiskey, there was plenty of knowledge to lead the successful renovations and additional buildings needed. Although the newer buildings are somewhat hidden at the back as so not to ruin the romantic ascetic. Two years of careful work brought the distillery to life and today the stills are running happily with those delicious aromas sweeping around each corner.
With its stone exterior and winding buildings, the journey is sure to be entirely one of pleasure, not least with a glass of their triple casked Irish whiskey in one of the converted stables tasting suites. Join us on our next visit to this beautiful distillery.
